Day ShiftThe boiler operator is responsible for maintaining boilers, chillers, and other mechanical equipment to provide continuous operations of utilities and steam for hospital buildings. They are responsible for assisting with providing general maintenance for various areas of the hospital on the 2nd shift, 3rd shift, weekend and holidaysBegin

  • Operates and maintains high pressure steam boilers (above 15 pounds pressure), or high pressure/high temperature water boilers (above 160 pounds pressure at 250 degrees Fahrenheit) for the continuous production of facility heating, hot water and/or electrical generation

  • Operates and maintains auxiliary equipment such as water softeners, boiler feed pumps, fuel conveyors, vacuum pumps, circulating pumps, medical air system and medical gas systems

  • Monitors water levels, pressure readings, fuel consumption and other related operations; performs chemical tests on water; records readings in the plant operations log

  • Adjusts controls on equipment to maintain a proper flow of steam and/or water and to ensure safety of operation

  • Powers down, cleans, and assists in the repair and maintenance of boilers and auxiliary equipment, such as replacing worn gaskets, tightening joints, and replacing defective valves, gauges, belts, and sight glasses

  • Blows down and washes boilers; scrapes and cleans flues; cleans pumps, screens, pipes, oil burners, strainers, and related parts and equipment

  • Tours boiler room frequently to monitor operating equipment, meters, and gauges to insure that operation is in accord with specified instructions

  • Manipulates valves to control the flow of water and fuel and to increase or decrease steam pressure as required

  • Adjusts equipment controls to correct malfunction when indicated by observation or in response to a signal light or alarm

  • Records in a logbook: meter, gauge and graph readings and repair work performed

  • Receives work orders and calls regarding all SoutheastHEALTH facilities on 2nd shift, and 3rd shift, and 1st shift on weekends/holidays; assesses information received, performs minor repairs and communicates with appropriate hospital staff

  • Contacts the Plant Operations Supervisor when critical services are needed outside the scope of work of the Boiler Operator or assistance is required

  • Performs general cleaning, maintenance, minor repair, and painting in the Boiler Room

  • Receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed through inspections and efficiency of operations

  • Maintains a clean and safe work area around boilers and auxiliary equipment

  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills through oral, written and electronic methods

  • Complies with all applicable standards, policies and procedures, including safety procedures and the maintenance of a clean work area

  • Respond to all Emergency codes that are appropriate to Facilities Management Department and as assigned

  • Assist with snow and ice removal as assigned

  • Ability to work independently without close supervision

  • Performs duties in a timely and efficient manner

  • Understands proper procedures for the requisition and purchase of supplies

  • Must be familiar with and adhere to Infection Control (ICRA) and Interim Life Safety Measure (ILSM) when performing job duties

  • Adheres to all regulatory compliance regulations and asks supervisors for clarification if needed

  • Demonstrates excellent communication and customer service skills through oral, written and electronic methods

  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing to patients, visitors, physicians and other hospital staff

  • Performs other related work as assigned


  • High School graduate

  • Current valid drivers’ license required

  • Ability read, write, and to follow oral and written instructions and to post data in logbook

  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with patients, visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff

  • Should have basic computer skills and the ability to adapt to various technology

  • Must be able to demonstrate an ability to work independently without close supervision

  • Must be able to demonstrate through experience an excellent customer service oriented attitude

  • Ability to perform minor functions with boiler feed controls and feed system controls

  • Introductory knowledge of the tools, methods and practices used in maintaining boilers and auxiliary equipment

  • Prior mechanical and/or plumbing experience preferred

  • Must be able to read, write and speak English
