Burns & McDonnell IT Process Specialist - IT (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


The IT Process Specialist is responsible developing, recommending, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to reduce cost, eliminate waste, improve process efficiencies, identify automation opportunities, and reduce operational risks. The role will work with other process owners and IT leadership to facilitate and improve current processes and ensure strategic alignment. The successful candidate will demonstrate process excellence, project management, change management and communication skills to manage automation related initiatives and effectively deliver results. In addition, collaborate and provide guidance on continuous improvement process initiatives across the Burns & McDonnell IT organization. The specialist will also assist with change management, configuration management, and problem management.

Job Duties:

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and business units to evaluate and analyze current process gaps, inefficiencies and opportunities.

  • Facilitate workshops, stakeholder interviews, and other forums with internal stakeholders and end users.

  • Utilize change management best practices to create support for change and business transformation with initiative teams and throughout the entire organization.

  • Use established tools and methodologies to develop key performance indicators (KPIs), and measure stakeholder engagement, adoption and overall progress of changes initiatives.

  • Conduct business process analysis and design focusing on quality improvement and data management

  • Identify opportunities for automating manual processes

  • Recommend process improvements, re-engineering, and elimination of non-value-added steps

  • Provide and support the implementation of solutions by identifying process changes required to go from current state to future state

  • Communicate updates and findings to process stakeholders and executive associates through formal communication mechanisms

  • Demonstrate efficiency gains or improved business KPIs

  • Lead automation efforts and system administration tasks focused on key Service Delivery tools (ServiceNow, Microsoft, MuleSoft, Flexera, LogicMonitor, Oracle MIS, OpenIT, and other technology solutions)

  • Builds and updates a prioritization roadmap/backlog for process automation projects based on effort required, risk, TCO, and other factors.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to convey key insights from complex analysis and ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical teams.

  • Recommend improvements on Change Management, Problem Management, and Configuration Management process that reflect ITIL best practices.

  • Facilitate the Change Management and Problem Management Process

  • Review Change Requests to determine the need and impact of potential production changes.

  • All other duties assigned


  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree or equivalent experience required; IT or related technical field is highly preferred.

  • A combination of between 2-5 years’ experience in business operations, business planning, project or proposal management, business modeling/mapping, business process development, leading organizational change initiatives and communications.

  • Experience in process mapping and reengineering, developing workflows and business requirements.

  • Experience facilitating workshops, focus groups and one-on-one interviews.

  • Experience managing complex change initiatives affecting multiple stakeholder groups.

  • Experience gathering high level business requirements and writing business cases

  • Experience researching and documenting an analysis of alternatives

  • Significant improvement experience and process re-engineering in a technology environment

  • Proven ability to effectively build partnerships and take a relationship-based approach in working with internal and external stakeholders to deliver process efficiencies, cost savings, minimize operational risks and increase process harmonization.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, comfortable with high degree of executive interaction

  • Ability to work independent of direct supervision

  • Highly organized and adept at time management

  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred Experience

  • Six Sigma or ITIL Certification

  • Prior experience in leading programs in business process automation

  • Facilitation skills in leading planning meetings, reviews, and retrospectives

  • Master’s degree is a plus

  • Training, experience, or formal education in Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), or Information Technology Services Management (ITSM) Methodologies

  • Knowledgeable of industry best practices and trends for change management, problem management, and configuration management

  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills as well as exceptional oral and written communication abilities

  • Candidate should be a motivated, self-starter with the ability to accomplish tasks under pressure with limited supervision.
