POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of Time)

Essential Functions: The Following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria:

Position Accountabilities

1) Acts as a resource and provides direction to departmental personnel. Responsible for the supervision and teaching of interns. (1, 2, 4, 6) 10%

Criteria

A) Demonstrates strong working knowledge of a variety of patient care equipment.

B) Serves as a resource to co-workers.

C) Communicates with other levels of management on a regular basis for planning and coordination.

D) Conducts job duties in accordance with established hospital policy and safety/sanitation standards.

E) Completes job duties within required timeframe, according to established schedules or workflow requirements.

F) Completes logs and records promptly, recording all information that could be pertinent to others.

G) Conducts job duties in accordance with departmental service standards.

2) Oversees special installation projects and department specific management programs. Schedules, performs and documents biomedical equipment repairs and tests all new and repaired biomedical equipment before it is put into clinical use. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) 20%

Criteria

A) Conducts job duties in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and safety/sanitation standards.

B) Completes job duties within required timeframe, according to established schedules or workflow requirements.

C) Completes logs and records promptly, recording all information that could be pertinent to others.

D) Plans all work steps to ensure success; considers time, supplies, and support required from other individuals and departments in setting up work plans and completing duties.

3) Oversees development of scheduled inspection protocols. Conducts and recommends action with incident investigations involving clinical equipment use and application. Performs and documents scheduled inspections and maintenance, and electrical safety tests of biomedical equipment necessary to maintain conformance to code requirements. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) 20%

B) Conducts job duties in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and safety/sanitation standards.

E) Plans all work steps to ensure success; considers time, supplies and support required from other individuals and departments in setting up work plans and completing duties.

4) Ensures that an inventory of biomedical equipment, replacement parts, and standby equipment necessary to minimize disruption of patient care is maintained. Coordinates supply information for use in the Building Services storeroom. (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8) 5%

Criteria

A) Assists in the containment of hospital costs through appropriate ordering of supplies, recovery of patient charges, and conservation of supplies.

B) Conducts job duties in accordance with department service standards.

5) Coordinates the training of medical, nursing, clinical staff and students in the safe use, application and maintenance of biomedical equipment. (1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8) 10%

Criteria

A) Conducts job duties in accordance with departmental service standards.

B) Communicates technical information in a manner appropriate for the intended audience.

C) Serves as a resource to clinical staff.

D) Completes logs and records promptly, recording all information that could be pertinent to others.

6) Provides technical support on new and replacement biomedical equipment. Reviews work performed by outside service vendors to ensure defined specifications are met, repairs are performed in a cost-effective manner, and results are properly documented. Keeps current on developments in biomedical equipment and systems. Participates in continuing education and training. Attends professional development seminars and administrative meetings when required. (1, 2, 3, 4, 6) 10%

Criteria

7) Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations when interacting with clinical personnel, patients, and visitors. (1, 3, 5, 6) 5%

Criteria

C) Conducts job duties in accordance with departmental service standards.

8) Safety/Infection Control: Practices according to safety and infection control policies. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) 5%

Criteria

A) Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.

B) Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards.

  3. Adheres to dress code.

C) Reports risk management concerns.

D) Assumes responsibility for completing all annual mandatory requirements:

9) Service: Provides service excellence to the customers of Saint Louis University Hospital by delivering timely, high quality care in a courteous, and respectful manner. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) 10%

Job Specifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Associate's Degree in Biomedical Engineering or Electronics or equivalent military training.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Ten (10) years in the biomedical equipment repair field, prefer hospital or healthcare experience.

REQUIRED COURSE: Chauffeur license (to operate shop vehicle for off-site work). CBET - Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician as recognized by the ICC (International Certification Committee). Ability to obtain CRES (Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist) or CLES (Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist) as recognized by the ICC (International Certification Committee).

WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment and biological hazards. This would include blood-borne pathogens, high voltage, radiation (diagnostic and therapeutic), chemical utilization, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Extremely heavy physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs or more), frequent prolonged standing/walking, pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies, ability to climb all ladders/lifts required to complete assigned tasks, confined space work (dust containment room, under/in/on equipment), manual dexterity (use of multitude of tools), visual acuity (ability to distinguish and identify colors and tiny parts and labels).

SPECIAL SKILLS: Safely use hand and power tools, electrical and electronic test equipment. Have the ability to read and interpret schematics and service manuals.
