Job Type/Schedule This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week. Rotating weekend and holiday work is required. Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: Provide and document care and husbandry for multiple animal species in accordance with departmental SOPS and regulations and guidelines of the Animal Welfare Act and the Public Health Service, to assure a quality animal care program that supports the research and teaching at Washington University. Provide care in specialized situations including biohazard, quarantine, and bioexclusion. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provide and document daily husbandry care to multiple species, including rabbits, non-human primates, canines, and rodents. Care includes the provision of feed, water, clean cages, and enrichment. 2. Sanitize and maintain rodent colony rooms according to the schedule, to include sweeping and mopping animal quarters and procedure rooms, disinfecting all areas in room, rotating animal cages, cleaning large equipment, and stocking room supplies. 3. Observe animals daily for clinical or behavioral signs of illness, and provide treatments as directed by veterinary staff. Report findings to the supervisor, facility manager or DCM veterinary staff in a timely fashion. 4. Correctly handle and dispose of hazardous wastes according to standard operating procedures. 5. Perform additional duties as required by the supervisor/manager/department, which may include hands-on training of junior-level technicians. Required Qualifications * Associate degree or an equivalent of two years of relevant laboratory animal research facility experience. * Obtain Purina certification within six months. * Obtain AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) within two years. Preferred Qualifications * Associate degree. * AALAS certification (LAT). * Three years of experience in laboratory animal care. * Ability to comprehend written and spoken English terms used in a biomedical research environment. * Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions from veterinary, supervisory and research staff. * Ability to flexibly cover husbandry in specialized situations or multiple animal facilities, including swing coverage for absent co-workers. * Conscientious attitude and concern for quality. Salary Range The hiring range for this position is $13.80 - $17.26 per hour.
