Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:

This posting is for a post-doctoral researcher to work in the Kummer lab in the Department of Neurology on projects related to the pathophysiology of acute brain injury, focusing mostly on cellular and molecular mechanisms and phenomenology in traumatic brain injury. Current projects are particularly geared towards understanding the role of acute brain injury in inducing long-term neurodegeneration such as Alzheimer’s disease. We are exploring synaptic alterations as a bridging mechanism between these conditions. Approaches will include animal models, quantitative immunohistological and microscopic analysis, molecular biology, advanced imaging including microscopy and MRI. There will also be an opportunity to work with human subjects with brain injury in the lab PIs clinical practice.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform and present research related to laboratory and personal goals.
  2. Supervise more junior researchers (graduate students, technicians, undergraduates, medical students, residents).
  3. Perform lab administration.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. from graduate school in biology, MD, or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in molecular biology.
  • Experience with basic coding skills in languages pertinent to biological research (R, python, matlab, julia).
  • Small animal experience.
  • Experience in the following areas: histology, microscopy, data management, and quantitative rigor.

Salary Range

Base pay commensurate with experience.

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
