An R01-funded postdoctoral fellow position is available immediately for the connectomic study of the development of the visual thalamus. The Morgan laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis uses a combination of optical imaging and large-scale serial-section electron microscopy to understand the synaptic connectivity of the visual system. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to pursue projects on the development of the circuitry of the mouse dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN). The dLGN is an important model system for understanding visual processing and activity dependent development and we expect a connectomic study of its development to reveal fundamental principles as to how neurons organize themselves into image processing circuitry. Other potential and ongoing projects include studies of the organization, degeneration and regeneration of the dLGN and studies of the synaptic organization of the mouse and human retina. The appointment is viewed as a training or transitional period preparatory to an academic, industrial, governmental, or other full-time research or teaching career. Used when the appointee performs specific services on a grant or contract in exchange for compensation.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor, including (but not limited to):
- Manages their own project, which should lead to a first author publication.
- Develops expertise in neural circuit imaging and analysis.
- Develops proficiency in career skills, including writing, public speaking, networking, and critical evaluation of scientific literature.
- Presents scientific work both inside and outside the University.
- Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
- Prepares and submits papers on research.
- Designs research experiments.
- Evaluates research findings and reports results.
- Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
- Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice, including the maintenance of adequate research records.
- Adheres to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.
- Ph.D., M.D. or an equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.
- Ability to manage and modify custom imaging and analysis software.
- Ph.D. degree in neuroscience, computer science or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory procedures, conduct research and records findings.
Base pay is commensurate with experience.
