Cigna Principal Enterprise Architect in St. Louis, Missouri

The Health Services Enterprise Architecture team is looking for a passionate and skilled Principal architect to join our team. We are primarily responsible for technology leadership in a fast paced technology transformation environment. In addition to enterprise architecture activities to develop and implement long term architecture strategy; we are looked upon as a key leader to effectively communicate and create organizational buy-in to strategic roadmaps within an Agile environment. We lead and collaborate within cross-functional agile teams to understand and navigate difficult topics of moving to a Platform-first environment from legacy technologies and simultaneously delivering timely and effective business solutions that align to our longer term business and technology objectives.

As a Principal architect, you will work closely with our engineering teams on frameworks, patterns, best practices, technology utilization (both existing and emerging), and solution architecture. You will help drive the technology strategy with recommendations on emerging technologies and approaches, both commercial or open source, in collaboration with our business and engineering partners. You should be comfortable to work with engineers to develop POC's and demonstrations to evaluate and articulate to senior leaders in the technology organization the SWOT of each respective technology. You will help promulgate new technology advances and advise applications and infrastructure leaders about these technologies, tools and solutions and their impact to their organizations. You will help drive complexity reduction. You are accountable to lead the architecture assessment and evaluations of our software ecosystem life-cycle, to include system retirements and migrations to new environments and Agile processes. And finally you should be results focused – our architecture need to be reflected in our products.


  • Develop long term technology strategy for business domains, major initiatives and the enterprise.

  • Present Architecture concepts and ideas both verbally and in writing to executive staff, business sponsors and technical staff to ensure that all of IT and its business clients understands and supports the Architecture direction.

  • Requires the creation, implementation and maintaining of Architecture Patterns and Target State Roadmaps in a transformational Agile environment.

  • Maintain solid communications with both Infrastructure and Application leadership to ensure that enterprise goals are being supported. Excellent Leadership, planning and negotiation skills.

  • Must also maintain solid collaborative working relationship between business and technology organizations at Senior Director(s) level scope of influence. You will be the architecture lead of enterprise-wide initiatives; accountable for ensuring the overall architecture of such projects align with long term enterprise architecture strategy.

  • Thorough knowledge of Architecture’s framework, procedures, and practices, Engineer or developer background Strategic thinker with ability to formulate plans, strategies, and outcomes.

  • Advanced problem solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments to resolve complex Architecture issues with innovative solutions.

  • Ability to adapt in a dynamic work environment and make independent decisions. Detail oriented; strong customer services focus; demonstrated ability to prioritize work environment and make independent decisions.


  • Strong knowledge of transactional, mission-critical, enterprise OS & platforms; experience in cloud technology preferred

  • Expertise in Big Data technology preferred

  • Experience with regulatory or Health care projects preferred

  • UNIX and Z/OS nice to have.
