Job Type/Schedule This position is full-time and works approximately 37.5 hours per week. Department Name/Job Location This position is in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. This position is for the Danforth Campus in the School of Engineering. Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: The Laboratory Technician assists with the daily operation of a research laboratory, manages ordering and supplies, and assists laboratory members in the conduct of animal experiments. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists laboratory members in the conduct of animal experiments, including perfusion, tissue preservation, and sectioning; histologic staining; immunohistochemistry staining; fluorescence microscopy; polymerase chain reaction analysis; and data analysis. 2. Prepares materials for animal experiments; orders and maintains lab supplies, chemicals, and equipment; amends animal protocols and Institutional Biological and Chemical Safety protocols. 3. Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with assays, protocols, and equipment. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods. 4. Submits revisions and renewals of animal protocols and Institutional Biological & Chemical (IBC) safety protocols. 5. Participates in lab meetings. 6. Assists with training of other technicians and undergraduate students on these techniques. 7. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications * High school diploma or equivalent high school certification and equivalent combination of education and experience equaling five years in a related field, or a bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of related experience. * Training in animal research and HIPPA will be required. Preferred Qualifications * Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, cancer biology or related fields. * Experience working in the field of neuroscience or cancer biology. * * Experience with animal experimental techniques, tissue sectioning, histological staining, immunohistochemistry and microscopy. * Interested in learning new skills and techniques as needed. * Ability to work carefully and to maintain complete and organized records/reports. * Good communication and organizational skills. Salary Range The hiring range for this position is $14.07 - $18.99 per hour.
