Essential Functions


Washington University School of Medicine seeks a creative, collaborative and detail-oriented individual to serve as a senior web UI/UX designer.

The selected individual will be primarily responsible for creating designs and user interfaces to achieve the school’s communications objectives. They will design and refine reusable components that comprise an elegant, flexible system used to create a unified experience across a wide range of sites. This individual will enhance the visual approach to the School of Medicine’s most important sites and the WashU Web Theme (webtheme.wustl.edu), a custom WordPress theme that is the shared platform used by hundreds of university sites.

The person in this position will report to the Director of Web Technical Strategy. The Director for Visual Brand will provide design direction and ensure unity of the work with the school and university brand. The web designer will work closely with content strategists, developers and other designers in Medical Public Affairs, our campus partners and our colleagues at the university’s Office of Public Affairs, bringing a collaborative spirit to all of these interactions in pursuit of our shared interests.


  • Improve the design, usability, user experience and effectiveness of the School of Medicine’s high-priority sites.
  • Work as a member of an interoffice team to enhance the design system underlying the WashU Web Theme and its associated plugins.
  • Design graphic assets (illustrations, infographics, icons, photo treatments, etc.) and layouts for websites, news releases, social media presences, videos, print pieces and E-mail templates.
  • Share knowledge and best practices with other members of the Medical Public Affairs team.
  • Perform any other appropriate tasks as assigned by the Director of Web Technical Strategy.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or the equivalent in experience.
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates knowledge of user interface principles and exceptional design skills.
  • At least three years of professional experience in web design; should include conceptualizing, designing and producing user-centered websites.
  • Expertise with Adobe Creative Cloud and WordPress.
  • Conversant with HTML and CSS.
  • Knowledgeable about responsive design best practices.
  • Success with meeting deadlines, multi-tasking and serving as design lead on projects of various sizes.
  • An iterative, systems-based approach to design.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Frontend development experience with HTML and CSS.
  • Familiarity with and advocacy for web accessibility standards.
  • Experience doing user testing of design options.
  • Animation skills.
  • Health care or higher education experience.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in all phases of work.
  • Ability to communicate well both in writing and orally with a variety of individuals, including faculty, administrators and other staff at the School of Medicine and university, as well as with external contractors.
  • Solid understanding of industry standards and best practices related to digital communications.
  • Ability to provide design options and recommendations.
  • A commitment to following the brand guidelines of the university and the School of Medicine.
  • A commitment to independent higher education in general and to Washington University in particular.

Salary Range

Base pay commensurate with experience.
