SSM Health System Manager - Occupational Safety in St. Louis, Missouri


Role Purpose:

The Occupational Safety Manager will assist in the development, design, and implementation of Policies, procedures, guidelines, tools and other resources to support the SSM Health Ministries in implementing, managing and monitoring and effective, OSHA complaint Occupational Safety Management Program across SSM Health. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operational management and support of the Program; and serves as a system subject matter expert and resource to the SSM Ministries assuring effective employee accident identification, prevention and loss control programs.


  • Develops and implements system occupational safety action plans and best practices, policies, and procedures for the organization, and monitors and assists ministries in implementing industry best practices, according to legal and regulatory requirements, quality standards, and industry best practices.

  • Develops, manages, trains, and monitors systems, policies, procedures, processes and guidelines for ministry supervisors to investigate occupational injuries and illnesses, including near misses to assist in understanding the cause of each loss and to develop options to mitigate or eliminate future injuries.

  • Proactively develops and implements regulatory, loss prevention and mitigation strategies, solutions and initiatives.

  • Investigate and direct others in the system investigation of system losses deemed to be “Employee Serious Losses” typically reportable to OSHA and potentially the excess Workers Compensation carrier in accordance with established requirements.

  • Assists with answering any inquiries from OSHA including attending inspections triggered by an injury, and assists with post-inspection activities.

  • Assists healthcare ministries in developing assessment tools and techniques to reduce, or minimize injuries and illnesses in key critical identified areas e.g. workplace violence, safe patient handling and slip, trip and falls.

  • Conducts onsite loss prevention/risk assessments to identify current practices, gaps, best practices, and opportunities for improvement. Assists the Ministries in identifying their level of risk and developing effective Actions Plans to mitigate exposures and achieve best practices and optimum results.

  • Assists in the development and training on core educational training materials and tools for key identified risk and exposures, e.g. safe patient handling procedures, and other relevant Occupational Safety and Health topics.

  • Regularly reviews data and prepares reports on key issues, develops relevant statistical analysis including OSHA rates, and publishes this information to the appropriate audience, as well as management in line with the OSHA recordkeeping and electronic reporting requirements.

  • Serves as a resource and subject matter expert as applicable for Healthcare Ministries on all questions relating to occupational injuries and illnesses, prevention tools, ergonomic accommodations, and other general inquiries regarding the safety of employees.

  • Completes additional safety related tasks as requested including establishing and providing system level support to safety teams and collaborative councils. Leads on special topics such as “Send Word Now”.

  • Works in collaboration with Safety, Human Resources, and Facility Managers to conduct additional assessments and surveys as requested. Provides generated system data to assist in developing effective mitigation action plans .


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.

  • At least 15 years of responsible, comparable experience

  • Must have demonstrated ability to make critical decisions, exercise sound judgement and discretion in handling of all confidential and sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation is preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting regulatory investigations preferred.
